The Court of Appeal has overturned a high court ruling in which it had nullified the election of Serere County Member of Parliament Patrick Okabe.

Soroti High Court had earlier ruled that Okabe was fraudulently elected following a petition by his political rival Linos Opio who ran to court challenging Okabe’s academic papers

A panel of three judges Justice Steven Kavuma, Cheborion Barishaki and Paul Mugamba this morning confirmed Okabe duly elected Member of Parliament for Serere County.

The same panel also held that FDC’s Sizomu Gershom Wambedde is the validly elected MP for Bungokho North Constituency in Mbale District after revisiting the academic papers of MP which were challenged by his NRM’s rival Peter Mashete Magomu saying his ground of petition that Wambedde contested when he was still a kind of Jews lacked merit because rabbi means a teacher of Jewish law.

Meanwhile the Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba has condemned the rampant acts of violence in Kagoma Constituency ahead of the Parliamentary by-elections.

This follows the Friday incident when Jinja District FDC Chairman Abubaker Maganda was beaten up by a group of youths suspected to be supporters of Alex Brandon Kintu an independent candidate in the race.

Lumumba who pitched camp in the area to campaign for the NRM flag bearer Moses Walyomu since yesterday while addressing people at Buwenge Catholic Church, St. Luke Anglican church and Apostles of Noah church urged police and other security agencies to hurriedly fish out the suspects to answer their likely charges, calling for calm in the area.

She said that each person had the right to support a candidate of their choice in a peaceful way, reminding parents of their natural responsibility of fostering discipline among their young ones if not the same errant children will one turn against them challenging the perpetrators of violence to apologise.
