The case in which Red Pepper directors and editors are charged with libel, computer misuse and publication of a story prejudicial to national security has been adjourned to March 15, 2018.

Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate James Mawanda Eremye adjourned the case after Abdul Salim Waiswa, a lawyer representing Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) failed to turn up for the hearing this morning.

Waiswa asked State Prosecutor Jonathan Kamugisha to represent him in the matter.

But Kamugisha asked for an adjournment of the case because he had not been notified of the progress of reconciliation talks between state and Red Pepper directors as well as editors.

During the last court session, Eremye was informed that reconciliation had kicked off between Red Pepper Publications Limited and the state and he asked the two groups to conclude dialogue before returning to court today.

Red Pepper lawyer, Denis Nyombi told the court that talks are progressing well.

He backed the request for an adjournment of the case saying Waiswa is well positioned to provide updates on the reconciliation process.

Red Peppers troubles stem from a news story titled “M7 plotting to overthrow Kagame – Rwanda,”   which was published in November 2017.  In the aftermath, the publication was closed.

After closure, the company directors; Arinaitwe Rugyendo, Patrick Mugumya, Johnson Musinguzi, Richard Tusiime and James Mujuni, and editors; Ben Bya-ra-baha, Richard Kintu and Tumusiime Francis were arrested and charged.

The paper hit the street on January 28 after more than two months off the stands.
