The Minister of Labour, Gender and Social Development, Janat Mukwaya, has responded to reported deaths of Ugandans who supposedly died in Arab countries of Oman, Kuwait, Bahrian UAE and Jordan in 2017.

The deaths whose information was unveiled to the public through a press statement by Mwine Mpaka, the youth representative for Western Uganda and David Abal, the Member of Parliament for Ngora County, indicated that 48 Ugandans had died in the said nations between January and August this year and were buried in deserts as they did not possess travel documents which were allegedly confiscated by companies they were working with.

But, Mukwaya says: “it is difficult for the government to stop people from travelling anywhere in the world for economic opportunities however they have instituted “joint monitoring visits and recruitments have been restricted to Jordan and Saudi Arabi, whose bilateral labor agreements were finalized.

Pre-departure training programs to facilitate psychological, social and cultural adjustment among others in the recipient countries have also been made a requirement to recruiting agencies.
