Government has insisted on switching off all unregistered sim-cards at midnight today, May 19.

Addressing Journalist in Kampala, the Minister for Information and ICT Frank Tumwebaze confirms that the deadline stands and all unregistered, unverified and un-validated SIM cards will be switched off initially for voice communications.

Tumwebaze’s statement comes against the backdrop of Parliament’s resolution to extend the registration exercise for not more than one year.

He further says that they have only provided few days for people with unregistered sim numbers but having money on their account to either send it to another registered sim card, bank account or withdraw.

According to the ICT Minister, a Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) record shows that submissions from telecom companies stand at 92 percent of all active registered sim cards in the country.

He further warns to punish telecom companies which might intend not to implement the switching off directive.
