Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and telecommunication Companies have been dragged to court over illegal taxing and enforcing tax on mobile money deposits.

One of the applicants John Turyakira told the media at Twed Towers today that president Museveni declared that the collection on mobile money deposits is illegal and erroneous and Ugandans must be refunded their money that has been collected since July 1st when the tax was enforced. He also faulted the minister of finance for the 1% tax saying the tax should be reduced to 0.5%

Turyakire adds that the decision and conduct of respondents taxing and enforcing a tax on mobile money deposits threatens and infringes on their fundamental human rights to property guaranteed by Article 26 of the constitution.

The case has been filled by Jonh Turyakira and Anthony Odur through their lawyer Arone Kiiza.

He calls upon Ugandans who have been affected by the tax to come up and join the struggle to fight for their freedom.

Meanwhile Mobile money agents in Kampala under their umbrella body Kampala mobile money dealers association in their meeting convened today at Sekawa Hotel have insisted on the need to meet with President Museveni over their plight on the 1% tax that has affected their business.

One of the members Tom Katamab says the tax should be completely abolished because it is draconian.

Their meeting ended prematurely following intervention from a Police Officer only identified as Nangumya who directed them to dissolve since they had convened illegally.
