Women activists from the East African Region under the East African Sub-region Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI) have blamed leaders for staying silent while women are continuously getting killed.

Addressing a joint press statement at Ntinda-Kampala, the EASSI Executive Director Sheila Kawamara says they feel betrayed by regional governments for not saving lives of mothers dying while giving birth and women kidnapped and murdered yet a lot of funds have been invested in combating terrorism.

In the past one year, Uganda has had close to 100 women and girls killed in a kind of an organized crime though Kenya, Tanzania and other EA countries had few cases.

Kawamala says they planning to form an East African Gender Alliance that will lobby for the assent of ECA Gender Equality and Development Bill by the heads of state in order to foster gender responsive governance and service delivery.
