The Democratic Party (DP) has distanced itself from the Bill fronted by the Mityana South Member of Parliament Richard Lumu that seeks to allow Leader of Opposition (LOP) elected in parliament.
Last week during the first Regional parliamentary sitting in Gulu City, the Mityana South MP Richard Lumu, a DP member moved a motion and was granted a leave to introduce a Private member’s Bill which is to have the LOP elected by the opposition MPs and the independents.
While addressing journalists at party political command center offices at Balintuma Rd in Mengo on Tuesday, the Acting DP Spokesperson Ismail Kirya said they are not part of the intended legislation because it undermines the Multi party dispensation they fought for.
Kirya adds that the Bill will cause disunity among the opposition MPs and the election process can easily be infiltrated by members who don’t subscribe to the opposition.
He also emphasized that the Bill will act as a multiplier effect on other positions like the party Whips, Commissioners, and Shadow Cabinet among others hence weakening political parties.
Kirya says much as DP acknowledges the weaknesses in the current Opposition leadership in Parliament, it doesn’t warrant coming up with such a law.
