Government is planning to come up with a bill that will merge all laws for Information, communication and Technology.

This was disclosed by the State Minister for ICT in charge of National Guidance, Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku while at the high-level panel of the Annual Media Convention 2024 conducted at Makerere University under the theme: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Social Networks to Combat Misinformation in Uganda.

Minister Kabbyanga says that the objective of having all laws in relation to communication merged is in the interest to control the challenges coming with the new technology innovations like Artificial Intelligence (AI) that has never been thought about.

At the same event, the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo noted that they are working with all stakeholders in the country to ensure the introduction of AI doesn’t promote misinformation which is a threat to the state but instead benefits the citizens.

Professor Bruce Mutsvairo, a Professor at Utrecht University in Netherlands warned the media houses in Uganda and Africa as a whole to be conscious of the new technologies especially AI that is likely to become a severe threat to journalists and their traditional operations.
