The Episcopal Conference of Rwanda is appealing to the world for support on the planned construction of a big Chapel of Mother Mary in Kibeho.
It should be remembered that during the Marian visions of the 1980s, Mother Mary asked the people to build for her two chapels in this place in remembrance of her visitation. The small Apparition Chapel has since been constructed.
The said construction started in 2001 immediately after the then Ordinary of the area, Rt. Rev. Bishop Augustin Misago declared the authenticity of the apparitions. The construction was completed and the Chapel inaugurated in 2003.
Now the task ahead lies in constructing a bigger one.
The Rector of the Kibeho shrine, Rev Fr Francis Harerimana says the Catholic Bishops of Rwanda met recently at the shrine over the same. He emphasized that the process is still in its initial stages.
To that effect, the Bishops’ Conference in Rwanda is also not yet informed about the exact amount this project will cost.
However, during an interview with our reporter, the Rector of the Shrine appealed for financial support from all corners of the globe as regards to this cause.
The Marian visions of Kibeho took place for a period of eight years; from 1981 up to 1989.
During this period, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the World appeared to three college students of Kibeho Girls High School run by the Banebikira Sisters.
Her message emphasized the importance of people praying the rosary as well as conversion and repentance.
During the said visions, Mother Mary foretold the 1994 Rwandan genocide when she showed her visionaries, rivers of blood that were about to start flowing as a result of hatred among people.
Among the three visionaries; Alphonsine Mumureke is currently a Rev. Sister working in Italy, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka currently stays at Kibeho as Mother Mary told her to stay around and pray for the sinful world and the third visionary, Marie Claire Mukangango was killed together with her husband during the genocide.
The duo was killed on their way while fleeing the capital, Kigali.
The Church has since had no clue about the whereabouts of her remains, though some underground work is being done in regards to the cause for her beautification and canonization.
