The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has announced the registration exercise for all coffee farmers in the country to protect the product on the European Market.
Among the requirements include; detailed land-use maps to confirm deforestation-free production after December 31, 2020; compliance with local legislation in production and a due-diligence statement covering the entire coffee supply chain indicating no more than a negligible risk of non-compliance.
The Director of Development Services at UCDA, Gerald Kyalo While addressing journalists in Kampala during the half day media breakfast meeting on Deforestation-Free Coffee, said the deadline is soon adding that in 2024/25 FY, government allocated UGX 13 billion for the exercise against a budget of UGX 34bn presented by UCDA, none the less the exercise will take place since there some partners who have come to their assistance.
Kyalo adds that Uganda exported 66% of its coffee in Europe last year which the government cannot afford to lose because of non registration of farmers.
Kyalo has advised Coffee farmers to refrain from misinformation from politicians but embraces the registration exercise to secure their market.
