President Museveni to launch GKMA-UDP to transform city roads

The government has announced the commencement of Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) with a commitment of UGX 3 trillion for its implementation.

Priority is put on enhancing mobility, connectivity and job creation.

In upgrading infrastructure, it includes roads, public transport, and utilities, with a target of renovating and constructing 330 kilometers of roads within five years (2024-2029).

This is a World Bank, Uganda and French funded program for infrastructure development which aims at modernized road network connectivity and Fostering economic growth within the metropolitan Area.

The State Minister for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye told the media in Kampala that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will officially launch the program next week on 10th September 2024 from Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.

Kyofatogabye says in the first phase covering over 140 Kms are going to be constructed in Kampala City, Mukono and Mpigi areas.

He has called for cooperation from all people for the government to undertake this construction work without any interruption.

The GKMA-UDP encompasses not only Kampala but also other key areas such as Entebbe, Kira, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Mukono, Nansana, and the districts of Mukono, Mpigi, and Wakiso.
