Perpetrators of Domestic Violence should be severely punished – Parliament

Deputy Speaker in the house

17th Sept 2024

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called for punitive measures to curb the increasing case of domestic violence.

This was during his communication to the House on Tuesday 17th September 2024 afternoon as parliament observed a moment of silence in honour of the fallen Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei who succumbed to injuries after her ex-boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her on fire.

Tayebwa noted that it’s unfortunate for the country to lose such important people in acts of domestic violence in presence of existing laws.

He called on all responsible authorities to take action against all perpetrators of domestic violence especially in remote areas.

The 33-year old Olympian died on 5th September 2024 at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya four days after her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, doused her with petrol and set her alight on Sunday 1st September 2024 at her home in Endebess in the western county of Trans-Nzoia in Kenya.

Cheptegei’s body was received Friday 13th September 2024 by family and anti-femicide crusaders, and the family transported it to their home in the Endebess before proceeding to Bukwo in eastern Uganda for a night vigil and burial that was held on Saturday 14th September 2024 a day later.

Cheptegei’s body is said to have sustained 80% of burns. Meanwhile her ex-lover Ndiema sustained 30% burns on his body and later succumbed to his wounds at the same hospital.
