The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Ruth Nakabirwa has assured Parliament that efforts are underway by the Government to reduce electricity tariffs.
This assurance came after the Arua City Woman MP, Mourine Osoru sought clarification on the exact electricity cost for her constituents now that Arua has been connected to the national grid.
Osoru emphasized the need for fairness in electricity tariffs across different regions to ensure balanced regional development.
Minister Nakabirwa confirmed that electricity will become more affordable nationwide, particularly with the planned reduction in tariffs come January next year.
She noted that the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has been reducing end-user tariffs since 2023, with the most recent adjustment occurring in the third quarter of 2024, resulting in a 1.5% weighted reduction.
In July 2024, ERA announced changes in The Tariff Schedule for the Third Quarter of 2024 indicating a reduction in Tariffs for Domestic Consumers to Shs 803 from Shs 819.4, Commercial Consumers to Shs 606.2 from Shs 615.9, Medium Industrial Consumers to Shs 452.1 from Shs 459.8, and Large Industrial Consumers to Shs 383.4 from Shs 388.5.
