The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has revealed to the Parliamentary Health Committee that the City Abattoir along Port Bell Road requires shilling 40 billion to revamp its standard operations to maintain hygiene.
This was after an inspection site visit by the Committee at the abattoir led by the Chairperson Dr. Joseph Ruyonga (Hoima West MP) and it was found that the abattoir was in dire need and operating in poor hygienic conditions due to lack of enough water after the facility’s water supply was cut off by the National Water and Sewerage corporation-NWSC.
The KCCA Director in charge of Commercial Services, Julius Kasirye said that for the City Abattoir to operate at the required standard, the Government needs to inject shs 40bn and restore the water supply after the accumulated debate owed to NWSC.
The committee members also argued that KCCA should stop allowing other businesses to operate in abattoirs besides the slaughtering of animals.
The same committee conducted a site visit at the Kalerwe Abattoir from where they noted that all the abattoirs need renovation to meet the required operating standards.
