The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has warned the public against pirating people’s content.
This has been disclosed by the Director Intellectual Property at URSB, Gilbert Agaba during a media stakeholders’ engagement on Copyright and Neighboring Rights to enhance awareness within Uganda’s creative sector.
He says actors, musicians, and computer programmers among others have to earn a living from their works but right now their efforts and innovations are pirated and end up not earning from their efforts either due to ignorance of the copyright law or knowingly doing it for elicit earning which is a mindset problem.
According to the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act of 2006, it is illegal to use artistic, scientific and literary works such as music, films, books, and computer programs without the explicit permission of the copyright owner or their representative.
Agaba adds that there are people who want to pay for content but they are not aware that URSB is in charge of enabling them to consume other people’s content legally.
He also advised content creators to ensure that they avoid uploading their works through social media handles without first registering it with URSB.
