DP warns about disease outbreak in Kampala over piling garbage

DP warns about disease outbreak in Kampala over piling garbage -story by Charles Katabalwa

The opposition Democratic Party (DP) is worried of the likely outbreak of disease and floods in Kampala during this rain season due to increased heaps of uncollected garbage in the city.

Since the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill on August 10th 2024, a lot of challenges have been registered in the collection of garbage by the Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA and other private companies in charge of garbage collection which has escalated the cost of garbage collection and delays, among others.

The acting DP Spokesperson Ismail Kiirya while addressing journalists at the party offices at Balintuma Road in Mengo, Kampala said that garbage has become a big challenge in the city and has now put the lives of the citizens at risk of diseases such as cholera and typhoid, among others.

Kiirya is asking KCCA for a deliberate plan to reduce the heaps of garbage in Kampala because some people have started throwing the garbage into trenches which will lead to blockage and floods during the rainy season.

He meanwhile calls upon the KCCA Councilors and the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to urgently work on this issue rather than the unnecessary fights they engage in like the case was during the Council sitting of Tuesday September 17th 2024 at City Hall.
