Older persons are seeking for more social and economic protection to fully enjoy their rights in Uganda like it is with other citizens.
This has been stated by the State Minister for the Elderly, Dominic Mafabi Gidudu while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Center on the forthcoming celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on 1st October, 2024.
The celebration to be held at the Liberation Square in Masaka City will run under the theme; “Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Older Persons; Everyone’s Responsibility Because Aging is Not Optional”.
Gidudu says Approximately 25%Older persons in Uganda suffer from of abuse such as sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and domestic violence; which sometimes involves violence by their intimate partners.
Gidudu adds that this year’s theme gives an opportunity to highlight the efforts Government has employed to promote and protect the rights of older persons, provide inclusive access to Government programs for all older persons and encourage inter-generational support towards older persons for inclusive development.
He called upon the Government to continue extending services to the elderly, especially those in the villages.
