Gov’t to Start Compensating Kiteezi Victims

State Minister for Housing under the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Persis Namuganza

Government has appealed to tenants, landlords and the people who lived in the now declared buffer-zones and are currently living in the tents erected at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground to remain calm as they finalize processes aimed at compensating them.

This has been disclosed by the State Minister for Housing under the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Persis Namuganza while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.

She says that the people living in tents will first be given Shs 2m each to rent spaces to stay, then after the landlords will be brought on board for their compensation.

Namuganza adds that cabinet has finalized all arrangements to see that the Ministry of Finance releases shs 83bn to the Office of the Prime Minister such that the landlords are cleared.

The Minister’s comments come a day after the stranded residents of Kiteezi decried delays in the compensation processes before the acting KCCA Executive Director Frank Rusa who was on an on-site visit.

It should be recalled that the Kiteezi landfill disaster that resulted into this mess happened on August 10th 2024 at the country’s biggest landfill located in Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso district which resulted in the death of over 35 people and destruction of property worth millions of shillings.
