The Inspector General of Government Beti Kamya has announced the recovery of shs 8 billion worth of assets from individuals involved in corruption.
This revelation came as she presented the Inspectorate of Government’s annual reports for the financial years 2022/23 and 2023/24 to the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.
According to the reports, shs 5.7 billion were recovered in 2022/23, while shs 2.3 billion were recovered in 2023/24.
Additionally, assets valued at shs 31.3 billion have been ordered for recovery, with shs 15.6 billion in 2022/23 and shs 15.7 billion in 2023/24.
The reports also indicate that a total of 802 corruption cases were investigated, comprising 330 cases in 2022/23 and 472 cases in 2023/24.
However, IGG Kamya expressed concern over the increasing number of corruption complaints, which rose from 1,309 to 1,657 during the same period.
Kamya’s reports highlight the ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Uganda, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to address this persistent vice.
According to a study that was conducted by the IGG, Uganda loses close to shs 10 trillion annually to corruption.
