Kiteezi Landlords Decline Government’s Shs2m Relief Funds

Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda

Landlords at the Kiteezi victims’ camp at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School have refused to accept the Shs 2m that has been provided by the Government to enable them go and rent somewhere else as they wait for their compensation at a later date.

They disclosed this before the Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda who represented the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at Kiteezi on Friday as she commissioned the closure of the Kiteezi camp which has been hosing the victims of the garbage slide for almost two months.

Since the tragedy at the Kiteezi landfill on August 10th 2024 which left 35 people dead, the Government set up this camp to help the survivors and it has housed 233 people and out of these, 100 are landlords and 133 are tenants.

The landlords say it is okay for the tenants to get this money and go find a place to stay but for them as landlords they can’t receive this money since it is not enough in comparison to the losses they suffered following the Kiteezi disaster.

In response, Minister Kabanda explained that this money is not about compensation but it’s for those in tents to get somewhere they can rent as they process their compensation ahead of full closure of the camp by Friday next week.

Meanwhile, some residents at the camp have appealed to the Government to put up a monument at Kiteezi in commemoration of the people who lost their lives and those who haven’t been seen to date.
