Non Government Organizations (NGOs) advocating for palliative care in the country, have requested the Government to inject more funds and establishment of a policy and guidelines for this kind of services.
This comes at a time when Uganda prepares to join the international community to mark the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on Saturday 12th, October 2024 under the theme; “Committed to strengthen palliative care as a component for comprehensive care in Uganda”.
The year 2024 marks 10 years since the World Health Assembly (WHO’s Governing Body) passed the only stand-alone resolution on palliative care that has been in provision for 30 years in Uganda.
Mark Donald Mwesigwa, the Executive Director of Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) noted that the Government should ensure more funds are allocated for this service so that trained personnel are recruited, paid and dispatched into the communities to provide palliative care services.
Dr Moses Muwanga, the Assistant Commissioner Palliative Care and Hospice Services in the Ministry of Health says the Government has supported Palliative care services by training health workers, procuring the morphine drug, and sensitizing the public about the service among others.
