The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has commenced phase one of the mass enrollment and registration exercise for all unregistered Ugandans.
Osborn Mushabe, the Communication Manager of NIRA says the exercise is taking place in a period of 53 days until 23rd of November 2024 across the whole country.
Mushabe says the exercise is being conducted in the form of mobile outreaches in all the sub-counties, parishes, schools, hospitals, sports grounds and places of worship among others.
In the same vein, NIRA is also updating details of pupils and students who registered years ago from schools and have now attained 16 years of age, qualifying to acquire a national Identification Card.
It should be recalled that the first batch of the current IDs were issued in 2014 and 2015 with a 10-year lifespan with their expiry between August 2024 and June 2025.
Meanwhile, NIRA announced that they are to include the iris as an additional biometric feature to the new IDs intended to fight forgery.
NIRA indicated that the enrollment and registration exercise will be free of charge but one who wants to change particulars on their ID will have to part with shs 300,000.
