Four time presidential candidate also founding President of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party, Dr. Kizza Besigye has called for what he has termed as the second liberation of Uganda.
He says this means the restoration of power in the hands of the citizens to foster unity and development of the country.
He made the remarks on Independence Day morning while addressing the media at his offices at Katonga Road in Kampala about the state of affairs in the country as it celebrates the 62nd Independence Day celebrations on October 9th 2024.
Besigye notes that the agenda of fighting for independence in 1962 was to fight ignorance, poverty and disease.
He says this was to be reached through establishment of quality and accessible education, health centers and creation of various developmental programs for all.
However, Dr. Besigye alleges that during the 39 year rule of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Government under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, all these have not been achieved.
He says the 62 years have been characterized by rampant corruption, poverty, violation of human rights and failure to have peaceful transfer of power.
Meanwhile, the acting President of FDC Katonga Faction, Erias Lukwago has called upon Members of Parliament to stop talking about constitutional amendments under the current regime because this passes as idle talk but urged them to instead lead Ugandans into focusing on how a peaceful transition can be attained in Uganda.
