Health authorities in Nakasongola district in Central Uganda have reported a rise in Monkeypox (Mpox) cases, from 21 to 24 cases within the past 24 hours.
Dr. Agaba Byamukama, the Nakasongola District Health Officer (DHO) notes that the surge is particularly pronounced in the fishing communities of Lwampanga Town Council.
In response to this situation, the Uganda Prison Services have suspended visits for inmates until the outbreak is under control.
Moses Ssentalo, the Assistant Public Relations Officer for the Prison Services states that after identifying an inmate with the virus two days ago at Nakasongola Prison, they have implemented comprehensive measures to contain and combat the spread of Mpox within the facility.
This follows the decision by the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus determining that the upsurge of Mpox in central African countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Gabon, and Rwanda among others constitutes a public health emergency of international concern under the International Health Regulations (2005).
