The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) acting Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza has rejected voices pushing for his resignation following the errors which were witnessed in the recently released report of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census.
While addressing the media during a breakfast meeting at Serena Hotel Kampala on Tuesday, Mukiza noted that the mistakes in the results were common errors, urging critics to focus on productive discussions rather than seeking personal accountability.
However, Dr. Mukiza has admitted that there were significant errors in the information on tribes in the 2024 Census results they released last week but with no impact on the final statistical results.
The report indicated that people of the Acholi tribe have reduced from 2.1 million to 1.9 million in the last 10 years from 2014, while the Bagisu are only 2.1 million from 2.4 million people that was indicated in the last census. The report also indicated that the population of main religious denominations that included the Catholics had declined among others.
Mukiza says people should instead praise the work done by the Bureau which is going to help the socio-economic and political growth of the country rather than asking for the resignation of the Bureau’s officials.
Mukiza insists that despite the errors the results will serve as the official data guiding Uganda’s national planning until the next census in 2034.
