Mpox Cases Confirmed in Nakasongola, Masindi Prisons

Frank Baine, the Prisons Service Spokesperson

The Uganda Prisons Services (UPS) has established an isolation center at Bamunanika Prison to offer treatment to prisoners affected by Monkeypox (Mpox).

This is after three cases of Mpox were registered in Nakasongola and Masindi prisons with patients already isolated and receiving treatment.

An outbreak of the disease at two of Uganda’s overcrowded prisons could become a major concern for health authorities.

Frank Baine, the Prisons Service Spokesperson says that the three patients are in recovery status and the situation is under control in all prisons.

The World Health Organization declared Mpox, a global public health emergency for the second time in two years in August this year, following an outbreak of the viral infection in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, which has spread to Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
