The Lord Mayor of Kampala City, Erias Lukwago has demanded for a comprehensive report from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Technical Team on how funds collected from well-wishers amounting to over Shs 100 million meant to support the Kiteezi landfill victims was spent.
Lukwago has been shocked to learn that the over shs 100 million that was donated by well wishers to the Kiteezi landfill victims was spent on hiring mobile toilets and paying allowances.
It should be remembered that after the Kiteezi tragedy on August 1oth 2024, which claimed 35 lives and many remained missing while hundreds were displaced, the Office of the Prime Minister together with the Uganda Red Cross Society opened a temporary residential camp at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground for the survivors that has been in operation for two months until it was officially closed last week.
For the last two months, different companies and individuals have been donating relief aid in the form of items and cash to support the survivors as they await Government support and relocation program.
While addressing the media at City Hall in Kampala, Lukwago said that all the funds that were donated totaling to shs 101 million is reported to have been spent with no clear accountability.
Lukwago notes that over shs 48 million was spent on deployment of mobile toilets and over shs 52 million was spent on paying allowances for excavation teams from 5th September-6th October 2024.
Meanwhile, Lukwago wants the Government to explain the criteria they used to identify a Ghanaian investor; Joseph Sian Agyepong who was officially handed control of the 36-hectare Kiteezi landfill to decommission it at no cost, which he says is very suspicious especially after shs 70 billion was earmarked for the decommissioning of this dumpsite.
