Parents with Expired IDs Can Register Children – NIRA

NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has cleared parents to register their children even if their national Identification Cards are expired given that the National Identification Number (NIN) does not expire.

This has been confirmed by the NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala following reports from several parents indicating that their National IDs expired; hence they could not register their children in the ongoing exercise.

She explains that the NIN from one parent can be used to register a child in case the other parent does not have one.

Kisembo explains that in their data base they have 6.3 million children below 20 years who are not registered however, the UBOS report indicates that 27.7 million children are not registered and they want to see that all of them are registered.

Kisembo also explained some of the challenges they have faced since they launched the countrywide registration campaign of children who do not have national IDs at the sub county level.

The challenges include; the exercise coinciding with the end of academic year examinations and heavy rains that have hindered their operations.

The ongoing registration campaign is expected to run up to November 23rd 2024.
