The death toll from the tragic accident that occurred at Kigogwa Town along the Kampala-Bombo road in Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso district has risen to 15.
According to the police, 11 of these deceased were reported dead at the scene while 4 more passed away on Wednesday.
24 others were injured, with 15 currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 9 in the normal ward at Kiruddu hospital.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says they are working tirelessly to identify the deceased through DNA testing, urging relatives to go forward to assist in the identification process of the deceased.
He however says the driver of the fuel truck involved in the accident remains at large though an investigation into the cause of this road crash is underway, utilizing available technologies such as CCTV cameras to piece together what happened.
Onyango emphasizes that the bodies of the victims will be released to their families once the DNA testing is complete.
The incident occurred on Tuesday October 22nd 2024 at about 3pm in Kigogwa Town along the Kampala-Bombo road when the driver of a fuel tanker, registration number UAM 292Q, travelling from Kampala to Gulu lost control and overturned.
In the ensuing chaos, locals rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker before it caught fire.
Police reported that four buildings housing nine shops were destroyed in the blaze, along with other property worth millions of shillings.
