KCCA Warns against Dumping Garbage in Water Channels

The acting Director of Public Health at KCCA, Dr. Sarah Zalwango (CENTER)

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has strongly warned people dumping garbage and waste in trenches, along roadsides and in other ungazetted places.

The warning came during a half day journalists’ orientation on sanitation in the city organized by KCCA which covered both solid and sludge (liquid waste) management in Kampala with the aim to raise awareness on individual and collective responsibility and sustainability in as far as waste management is concerned in Kampala.

The acting Director of Public Health at KCCA, Dr. Sarah Zalwango while addressing journalists at City Hall said that Kampala city is labeled as a dirty city due to carelessness of some people who must change their habits.

Zalwango adds that some people and industries have a tendency of releasing waste into water channels mostly during the rainy season, which ends up affecting the sanitation and hygiene in the city.

However, Zalwango challenged the public to learn how to manage their garbage and waste if they are to generate income from it.

She has also advised journalists to name and shame those who mishandle waste in the city.
