The Democratic Party (DP) has urged the Ministry of Works and Transport to expedite the renovation works on the Karuma Bridge to avoid hardships likely to be experienced by travelers during the forthcoming festive season.
Karuma Bridge is currently undergoing renovation since September 23, 2024 following the cracks which had started developing on the bridge which put the lives of its users at risk.
The acting DP Spokesperson Ismail Kiirya says currently road users from Kampala to Gulu face difficulties because they either pass through the Murchison Falls National Park or use the eastern route which is costly and will worsen during the festive season because drivers tend to hike the transport fees.
Kiirya adds that during the festive season people buy items to take to different destinations for sale, but the current exorbitant transport charges are likely to affect their returns.
He has urged the Government to think of an alternative bridge to save travelers from interruptions in case the Karuma Bridge is not completed in time.
