Luke Oweyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson

Police at Old Kampala have in detention a security guard who was arrested in relation to the robbery of cash amounting to shs 1.06 billion which was in transit.

According to the police, the suspect identified as Charles Otim, a security guard attached to G4S Security Company, together with his colleague who is on the run, robbed the money they were transporting from Lubowa to Nakasero on November 19th 2024 and later went into hiding.

Luke Oweyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson says the suspects were transporting over shs 1 billion from Lubowa while in a vehicle registration number UAJ 199T Box body belonging to G4S Security Company, but when they reached Nabunya Road in Lubaga Division, they stole the cash, abandoned the car and their two guns and took-off.

Owoyesigyire says that police recovered the vehicle and the two guns which the suspects had abandoned but later they arrested Otim and recovered Shs 117 millions and another USD 14,400 from him.

He says that investigations into the robbery are ongoing because they have not been registering such cases of robbing of cash in transit by security guards.

Meanwhile, about 13 Parish Chiefs and other Local Government officials from three districts have been arrested over embezzlement of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested from the district of Moroto, Serere and Amudat on various offences in relation to misappropriation of PDM funds.

This comes after President Museveni recently blamed elected leaders including Members of Parliament and Local Councilors for failing to ensure proper management of PDM monies.

Kituuma Rusoke, the Police Spokesperson says that the suspects include eight Local Government leaders and Parish Chiefs of Kabulala Parish and Kadugulu Sub County in Serere district for misappropriation of funds meant for Irukoni and Kabulabula Kaddungulu PDM SACCOS.

Rusoke says they found that many people were registered using their national IDs to benefit as SACCO members of Irukoni and Kabulabula Kaddungulu PDM SACCOS but they were not aware of their registration.

He also noted that four Parish Chiefs of Lokaris Parish were arrested for deleting names of registered people from lists of beneficiaries and replacing them with other people.
