According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda has an annual demand of about 450,000 units of blood but falls short by over 30 percent of the required units. The Organization recommends that 1 percent of blood be collected annually from the population to fill this gap.
While addressing journalists during the launch of the drive at Post Bank headquarters along Nkuruma Road in Kampala, Julius Kakeeto, the Bank’s Managing Director disclosed that they launched tha drive at regional level namely; Northern, Eastern Western and Central targeting all the 1,200 employees of Post Bank.
Kakeeto adds that this initiative also aims to raise public awareness about the importance of blood donations, more so this coming festive season where many accidents are registered and victims need blood to save their lives.
However, Kakeeto adds that apart from keeping customers’ funds safe, they are committed to help Uganda’s population to be productive but this can only be achieved when they are healthy.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dorothy Kyeyune, the Director UBTS has applauded Post Bank for this initiative mostly when the prime blood donors; the students are going home for the end of year holidays.
