Over 3,200 cases of human trafficking have been recorded by yesterday according to a released report for the year 2024.
The report from records by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) shows that among the 3,259 total number of cases, 79 percent involved children.
Derek Basalirwa Kigenyi, the Deputy Coordinator of Prevention of Trafficking in Persons in the Ministry of Internal Affairs says 4,965 people were victims in these cases whereas 496 are suspects involved in human trafficking.
He adds that in terms of age group, 2,543 were children and 452 were adults trafficked and 93.4 percent cases were within the country while 6.6 percent were abroad.
1,137 victims of human trafficking were defiled or raped while 658 were recruited into forced labour whereas 144 were both defiled or raped and engaged into forced labour.
According to Kigenyi, most cases were recorded in Mbale with 373 cases followed by Kampala with 257 and Jinja with 253 while Soroti, Arua and Mpigi had the least cases of human trafficking.
