The General Court Martial has further remanded Col. (Retired) Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Haji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya to Luzira Prison until January 7, 2025, over unwarranted restrictions and shortfalls in the Makindye based General Court Martial raised by the defence team.
The legal team, led by Erias Lukwago and Eron Kiiza has raised several concerns, including the arrest of one of their colleagues, Major (Retired) Ronald Iduli, the lack of sufficient seating facilities for the lawyers and the denial of a practicing certificate for Martha Karua, who was set to be the lead counsel.
Lukwago informed the court that the defense team was not fully constituted due to these issues and as a result, they were unable to proceed and asked for an adjournment to settle the pending issues.
While addressing journalists after the court session, Lukwago condemned the manner in which the Court Martial is behaving towards civilians but declined to be submissive to any form of impunity.
Meanwhile, Karua has also condemned the Ugandan security forces for acting unprofessional and also assured that they are going to push to see that Dr. Besigye and friends get justice.
Among the opposition players who showed solidarity by appearing in court on Tuesday include; the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, his predecessors Winnie Kiiza and Betty Aol Ocan, Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Nyendo Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) President Maj. Gen. Gregg Mugisha Muntu, Amb. Wasswa Birigwa, and Ingrid Turinawe among others.
Besigye and Lutale are facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
