Rights Activists Call for Mental Check-ups for Gun Holding Personnel

Activist Habibu Buwembo

Human rights activists are calling for annual mental health check-ups for all security personnel holding guns to curb the careless firing of guns which is claiming many innocent lives in the country.

This comes after Monday afternoon’s incident which happened at around 2 pm along Ssezibwa Road in Kampala when a Police Constable Charles Bahati got involved in an altercation with a one Julius Ssemwaka, the driver of vehicle registration number UAX 480C which resulted into the officer shooting Ssekamwa and killing him instantly.

While speaking to our reporter in Kampala on Tuesday, National Unity Platform (NUP) member attached to the Rubaga Social Justice Center (RSJC) Habibu Buwembo says a lot of gun shots have been fired in Uganda without clear information given instead Police hiding behind the never conclusive investigations.

Buwembo adds that if all people holding guns are examined annually to check their mental stability, this will help identify those who are in position of holding firearms so that they are disarmed to avoid such carless shootings.

He meanwhile calls for immediate action to be taken upon the policeman who killed Ssemwaka so that justice is served to his family.
