Kampala Vendors’ Leaders ask new KCCA ED to Maintain ‘Evening Markets’

Newly appointed KCCA E.D Sharifah Buzeki

The Federation of Kampala Street Vendors Associations has appealed to the newly appointed Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Hajat Sharifah Buzeki to consider allowing them to run permanent evening markets on some roads in the city center.

The outgoing acting KCCA ED, Frank Rusa granted evening markets in Kampala during the Christmas period on some roads such as Namirembe Road to allow traders make some money.

While talking to our reporter, Andrew Kasagga, a leader at the Kalerwe Hawkers’ Market and a member of the Vendors’ Federation disclosed that the evening market during Christmas has done them a lot of good and this must be made permanent to allow vendors improve their economic wellbeing.

Kasagga adds that Buzeki should consider meeting with the vendors’ leaders first to guide her on how best this market can be run without any disturbance in Kampala.

He has also tasked her to grant vendors permits to work in the city in an orderly manner so that they also pay taxes because they are willing to contribute to the country’s development.

On Thursday December 26th 2024 the deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Haji Faruk Kirunda, through his X platform (formerly Twitter), confirmed the by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Hajat Sharifah Buzeki as the new substantive ED KCCA along with Benon Kigenyi as the deputy ED.

Their appointment follows the sacking of Dorothy Kisaka, the former ED along with Eng. David Luyimbaazi, her then deputy and Dr. Daniel Okello, the former Director of Public Health at KCCA over negligence of their duties during the tragic Kiteezi landfill collapse of August 10th 2024 which claimed 35 lives and destroyed properties worth millions of shillings.
