The Government through the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has announced a reduction of 5.2% for the end-user electricity tariffs for the first quarter of 2025, that is; January, February and March.
Speaking to the press at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Thursday, the Chairperson of ERA, Dr. Sarah Kanaabi Wasagali explained that the domestic users shall pay 250 shillings for the first 15 units purchased in a month commonly known as lifeline.
The domestic tariffs have been reduced from 796.4 shillings in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 775.7 shillings per unit in the first quarter of 2025.
The commercial tariffs have reduced from 600 shillings per unit to 575 shillings per unit whereas medium manufacturing tariffs have reduced from 448 shillings to 418 shillings.
The large industrial manufacturing tariffs have reduced from 379 shillings to 352 shillings, the extra large manufacturing tariffs have reduced from 320 shillings per unit to 299 shillings and the street lighting tariffs have reduced from 370 shillings to 360 shillings.
Kanaabi says this reduction in tariff rates will help in reducing the cost of delivery of electricity services by 155 billion shillings.
She also attributed that reduction of electricity on assumptions of electricity demand growth, end of UMEME Limited’s concession, quarterly tariff reviews, and the Karuma Hydro Power Plant commencement, among others.
