Parliament tasks Gov’t on the Continued Trying of Civilians in Army Courts

Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi

The Government through the Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi has pledged to submit a report to Parliament on the legal opinion of trying civilians in the General Court Martial of the UPDF.

This was after several concerns from Members of Parliament during Thursday morning’s plenary session chaired by the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.

The MPs who raised the concern included; the Bukonzo West MP Atkins Katushabe and Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda who challenged the continuous trail of Col. (Retired) Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleague Haji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya in the Makindye based military court contrary.

This led to the Speaker Anita Among to request the Government legal team to submit a report to Parliament without indulging into the gist of the matters in court to avoid subjudice.

The MPs have also demanded that without a justifiable legal opinion on trying civilians in military courts, all political prisoners and other civilians currently being tried there be released unconditionally.
