Stephanie Urchick, the President of Rotary International has hailed the Catholic Church in Uganda for offering land for the Cancer Operating Centre at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
Urchick says she acknowledges the collaboration by the Church and the Government of Uganda along with other organizations to support the program of fighting cancer in the country.
She said this while at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya launching this year’s Annual Rotary Cancer Run that is scheduled to take place on August 21st 2025 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds in Kampala and other parts of the country and in other foreign countries.
Urchick believes that with such a strong collaboration, cancer can be eliminated in the country.
Dr. Andrew Ssekitooleko, the Managing Director of St. Francis Hospital Nsambya noted that they still need 2 billion Shillings to start off the construction of the bunkers at the facility.
The Rotary Cancer Run started in 2012 where proceeds from the first three runs were used to construct the Rotary/Centenary Bank Cancer Centre at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya, while the 200 million Shillings from the 2015 run constructed the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital.
Centenary Bank, the main partner for this cause, has handed over a dummy cheque of 500 million Shillings towards this year’s cancer run.
