Dr. Besigye, Haji. Lutale Slapped with new Treachery Charges

Dr. Besigye, Haji. Lutale in court Martial

Military Court prosecutors have added a treachery charge against Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, who were initially facing charges of unlawful possession of ammunition and firearms.

The amended charges now include a third defendant, Captain Denis Ola, a serving UPDF Officer from the Armoured Brigade, who has been added to the case, also facing the same charge of treachery.

The defense, led by renowned Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, has contested the amendment, claiming that the inclusion of a serving soldier was intended to rectify alleged illegalities and revive a case that they believe should not be tried in a court martial.

Meanwhile, Karua has condemned the security for mistreating defense lawyers.

After the additional charges the accused persons asked to take plea and they declined claiming they are not military serving officers, although the prosecution side gave evidence why they should be tried in the Court Martial.

This sparked confusion between the defense lawyers and the prosecution which led the court to be adjourned by the Chairman Brig. Gen. Robert Gabriel Mugabe to Tuesday January 14th 2025 for further hearing.

Meanwhile, Counsel Michael Kintu who is one of the defense lawyers has condemned the Court Martial for behaving unprofessionally towards them.
