Dr. Besigye’s Lawyers Vow to Push for His Release from Court Martial Detention

Lawyers representing Col (Retired) Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate Haji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya have condemned both the Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabasaija and Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka over the continued detention of their clients despite the Supreme Court ruling.

Today lawyers led by Martha Karua, their lead counsel and Erias Lwakwago visited both offices of Commissioner General of Prisons and Attorney General to get answers as to why Besigye and Lutale are still in prisons yet the Supreme Court directed for their release because the General Court Martial has no capacity to try civilians.

While talking to the media immediately after the visit, Karua disclosed that no one has powers to overturn the Supreme Court ruling unless they don’t respect the constitution of Uganda.

Karua adds that even the Uganda Prison Services have no powers to still detain their clients yet they were set free.

Meanwhile, Lukwago disclosed that they are going to use any means possible to help Dr. Besigye and his colleague get released unconditionally plus all the National Unity Platform (NUP) who have been facing similar charges in the GCM for almost four years.

The trial of Dr. Besigye and Lutale before the General Court Martial in Makindye was abruptly put on hold on Monday after the Supreme Court stopped all cases involving civilians in the court.
