Lawyers’ Body Sets Up Committee to Interpret Supreme Court on Military Courts

ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has constituted an advisory team to interpret the Supreme Court judgment that was passed last week on the trial of civilians in military courts.

Last week the Supreme Court declared that it’s illegal to charge civilians in military courts but didn’t disclose how the judgment should be implemented hence causing confusion among members of the public.

Speaking to the press in Kampala, the ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde welcomed the Supreme Court judgment and noted that to address the current confusion within the public the constituted team will have one week to come up with the interpretation that will be sent to various Government institutions that include; the Attorney General Chambers, Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution and the Uganda Prison Services to see that all prisoners that have been tried by the General Court Martial are released before the next step is implemented.

The Treasurer of the ULS, Anthony Isiko also explained that implementing the resolution if not handled immediately it may take even seven years to be implemented and it is against this that they are setting up a demilitarization fund to see that they get about 10 billion shillings to see that suspects in prisons get lawyers that can help them be released.
