Security agencies have attributed their growing utility bills to inadequate funding allocations.
This comes as the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Uganda Police Force and the Uganda Prison Services appeared before the Parliamentary Joint Committees of Finance and Natural Resources to address the alarming arrears owed to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).
In a petition to Parliament, NWSC expressed concern over the rising unpaid utility bills from security forces and hospitals, totaling over 100 billion shillings.
According to the petition, the Ministry of Defence owes NWSC 36.3 billion shillings, the Uganda Police 24 billion, and Uganda Prisons 18.2 billion, collectively accounting for 75% of the debt.
The team, led by Minister of Defence Jacob Oboth, acknowledged the debt and proposed the installation of prepaid meters. The Minister also urged the Ministry of Finance to prioritize the release of funds to cover the outstanding arrears.
