The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has called on the leadership in the Judiciary to take swift action against the High Court Judge, Dr. Douglas Singiza for alleged blatant disregard of the law and human rights.
ULS accuse Dr. Singiza for arbitrarily denying Dr. Kizza Besigye habeas corpus petition, an expeditious hearing, which contravenes the constitution and the law.
In a statement released on Monday, the ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe said that Besigye’s case is not an isolated incident, as Judge Singiza is also alleged to have denied an expeditious hearing to a similar petition by the Society on behalf of its member, Advocate Eron Kiiza and also sanctioned human rights abuses, including the torture of political Activist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, which led to the latter’s move into exile in 2022.
Asiimwe says Besigye is entitled to an immediate release following the Supreme Court ruling against the trial of civilians by the General Court Martial, which Dr. Singiza has rejected.
He however rallies the international community to also hold Uganda accountable for its human rights obligations and ensure that justice is served.
