Molly Katanga Denied Bail at Third Time of Asking

Molly Katanga in Court

Molly Katanga, the widow of the late businessman; Henry Katanga has been denied bail for the third time by the High Court despite a spirited fight by her lawyers to get her released to access medical treatment.

During Friday’s court session, her legal team comprised of Peter Kabatsi, Elison Karuhanga and Jet Tumwebaze from Kampala Associated Advocates, alongside McDusman Kabega from Tumusiime Company Advocates emphasized her deteriorating health condition that called or urgent attention but Justice Rosette Comfort Kania of the High Court cited legal precedents – most notably the Supreme Court’s Kashaka case – that prioritize the gravity of capital offences over mitigating factors.

She did not make mention of anything to do with medical attention.

Molly Katanga faces charges in connection with the November 2023 death of her husband, Henry who was found dead in their family bedroom in Mbuya, Nakawa Division, Kampala while she was discovered unresponsive and severely injured in the same house.

While the judge agreed that Katanga posed no flight risk – citing her deep community ties, three substantial sureties and lack of prior convictions – she concluded that the prosecution’s “advanced case” justified continued detention.

Ten witnesses have already testified, with the trial set to resume on 10th March 2025.
