Over Shs1.8Trn Lost in Corruption Relates Cases in 2024

At least 1.82 trillion shillings was lost under corruption related cases, as per the economic crime cases recorded by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in 2024.

While providing the detailed report of the Annual Police Crime Report 2024, SCP Beata Chelimo, Deputy Director of CID says the money was lost through embezzlement, corruption and bank related crimes among others.

According to the report released last year by the Inspectorate of Government, Uganda loses about shillings 9.7 trillion annually in corruption, mainly through none and under-declaration of taxes, employees getting paid yet they work, inflated payrolls and botched procurement process among others.

Chelimo says they recorded a total of 13,132 cases of Economic crime related cases in 2024, reflecting an increase of 1.6% from over 12,000 cases in 2023.

Meanwhile, the CID recorded 218,715 cases in 2024 of which 14,425 were sexual related, 1473 domestic violence, 29,580 assaults, and 61,529 thefts among others.
