Ugandans below the age of 35 mostly perished in the road crashes that occurred last year in the country, according to the 2024 Annual Police Crime Report.
The report indicates that person’s below the age of 35 accounted for 55.7 percent of all the 2867 fatalities while those aged between 65 and 74 didn’t die yet 75 years and above contributed 1.4percent victims and 317 cases were unknown in terms of age group.
It also shows that fatalities last year increased by 7 percent from 4,806 in 2023 to 5,144 in 2024 with victims aged 35 years and below contributing to the highest number of 41% of the 59% seriously injured.
A total of 426,432 traffic offenders were arrested for various offences of which 84,156 offenders were arrested for using motor vehicles under dangerous mechanical condition and 67,418 offenders for careless driving, 41,643 for riding motorcycles without a valid driving license, while 38,935 drivers for driving without a valid driving license.
Speaking during the release of the report, AIGP Lawrence Nuwabine the Director Traffic and Road Safety noted road crashes occurred mostly on weekends between Friday and Sunday from 4pm to 5:59pm.
He however says that there are several steps being undertaken to improve the road safety situation in the country.
