MPs Urged to Lead Fight on Food Security

3rd Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama (Left)

The Office of the Prime Minister has emphasized the role of parliamentarians in raising awareness about food security and ensuring that children stay at school for sustainable population growth and development.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the Parliamentary Forum on Food Security, Population, and Development, the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama urged MPs to educate communities on food security and the dangers of early marriages to achieve national development goals.

Nakadama highlighted the Government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), emphasizing that their success depends on the support of MPs and other local leaders to create a meaningful impact on Ugandans’ lives.

The Forum’s Secretary General, Milton Muwuma (Kigulu South MP) cited a study revealing rising cases of child marriages and early pregnancies, particularly in the eastern region, which threatens the quality of the population.

Muwuma announced that starting next month, the Forum will engage with the leadership of Busoga Kingdom on food security, teenage pregnancies, and related issues to address these pressing challenges.

He further noted that while multiple factors contribute to these issues, poverty remains a significant challenge across various regions.
