Government expects to save 5 billion US Dollars on annual importation of drugs after the launching of Uganda’s first Biosciences Park at Kakooge village in Nakasongola district.

The groundbreaking ceremony conducted by the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s pursuit of scientific research, biotechnology, and innovation.

The park, expected to transform Uganda into a regional biotechnology hub, is being spearheaded by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).

Addressing the audience, the Prime Minister emphasized the park, besides saving approximately 5 billion US Dollars on importation of drugs, it also has the potential to create jobs, drive scientific research, and boost Uganda’s economy.

The Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, noted the struggles faced in securing land for the project but revealed happiness that the project is moving.

Lt. Gen. James Mugira, the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) Managing Director, assured the public of the company’s commitment to delivering on the project, citing previous successful ventures.

Lt. Gen. Mugira revealed that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) had donated a 50-acre piece of land for the development, which was previously occupied by a military barracks that has since been relocated to Kaweweta.

The park will also feature botanical gardens showcasing Uganda’s rich biodiversity and the construction is set to begin immediately, with stakeholders optimistic about its long-term impact on Uganda’s scientific and economic landscape.
